Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has been chosen for the Knight of the Legion Award, the French government’s highest civilian honour.

Lata won the award for her contribution to the world of cinema. The award will be presented to her in mid-December in Mumbai by French Ambassador, Dominique Gerard.

Others who have received the award in the past are late filmmaker Satyajit Ray and superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

The Legion of Honour - the highest distinction France confers on its citizen or a foreigner - was instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.

Last month, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan’s name was announced for this honour. Veteran Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray is also a recipient of this prestigious award.
