Actress Aishwarya Rai has landed in a mess after the Customs department found 65,000 euros (Rs 29 lakh) in a parcel addressed to her.

According to sources, the cash was detected during a routine check of parcels at Mumbai’s foreign post office. The parcel was sent to Aishwarya Rai on her Bandra (West) residence address.

The Customs authorities have registered a case against an unidentified person in this regard. The authorities, however, remain tightlipped as to under which section the case has been filed.

The authorities have also asked Aishwarya for her version on the matter.

According to Mumbai-based DNA newspaper, Rai has told the authorities that the package may have been sent to frame her. Sources said Rai might be called for questioning if required.

“We have not jumped to the conclusion that Rai is guilty of some impropriety,” a senior customs officer told the newspaper.

“We have to ascertain whether the money was actually meant for her,” the officer added.

The package is said to have been sent from South Africa by a South Indian man. Mumbai Customs superintendent S S Shenoy told DNA that the matter has been handed over to the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch.
